This is a technical design project I conducted during my final year of undergraduate study, on the production of Chlorobenzene from direct chlorination of Benzene. I would like to acknowledge the influence of my supervisor for this project in person of Dr. O.J Odejobi (Chemical engineering dept. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife), his knowledge & tutelage of the course helped in the success of the project.
ABSTRACT
Chlorobenzene is an aromatic organic compound with the chemical formula
C6H5Cl. It is characterized by its colorless, flammable liquid form, major application has been found for it as a common solvent and a widely used intermediate in the manufacture of other chemicals in the industries.
A proposed process design for the establishment of a production plant with the capacity to produce 20,000 ton/year of MonochloroBenzene together with not
less than 2000 ton/year of dichlorobenzene by direct chlorination of benzene (continuous
process).
The report contains an analysis and design proposal for the production of Monochloro
benzene and dichlorobenzene through the direct chlorination of the benzene, the report includes Material & Energy Balance, Equipment and Chemical sizing, Mechanical Sizing, Safety Analysis, and plant economics/costing.
The report also includes an Hysys simulation of the design from a process flow
diagram developed using the Visio-Process Engineering tool. The software used for the simulation includes ASPEN-HYSYS V10, MICROSOFT VISIO-2016.
From the simulation and design evaluation, the production of Monochlorobenzene
was found to be viable, with all safety measures highlighted in the report to ensure a safe running of the design plant and minimize pollution and possible accident sources.
